Publisher's summary

Read by the author.

A riveting look inside a life of poverty, success, and the inner circles of political influence—from the foothills of Appalachia all the way to the White House.

New York Times bestselling ghostwriter Nancy French is coming out of the shadows to tell her own incredible story.

Nancy's family hails from the foothills of the Appalachians, where life was dominated by coal mining, violence, abuse, and poverty. Longing for an adventure, she married a stranger, moved to New York, and dropped out of college. In spite of her lack of education, she found success as a ghostwriter for conservative political leaders. However, when she was unwilling to endorse an unsuitable president, her allies turned on her and she found herself spiritually adrift, politically confused, and occupationally unemployable.

Republicans mocked her, white nationalists targeted her, and her church community alienated her. But in spite of death threats, sexual humiliation, and political ostracization, she learned the importance of finding her own voice—and that the people she thought were her enemies could be her closest friends.

A poignant and engrossing memoir filled with humor and personal insights, Ghosted is a deeply American story of change, loss, and ultimately love.

Truly captivating - had me laughing & crying in the same sitting

Did not want to put it down! Nancy is a masterful storyteller & manages to avoid placing her characters/ people into simple black & white categories. Reality is always more complex; & stories are the better for recognizing it, even when it can’t be tied up neatly to fit a box.

Amazing!!!

I listened to the entire book in 48 hours. I put off sleep, work, etc. It is a tremendous feat of storytelling, all the better as narrated by the author herself. I can’t stop telling others around me to read or listen to this book.

This woman is a Hero to me.

While Nancy starts out awkwardly, believe me, she comes into her own. She’s a wonderful example of how change can happen within our thought process, how we can accept our part in the nurturing the cancerous growth that is hatred and work for the good of mankind. She faces and calls out hypocrisy of Christian adherents that move their lives with platitudes motivated by greed. She describes her encounters with racism, and sexual assault covered and thereby condoned by the “church”, and that people who survive sexual assault often suffer self doubt, self loathing and confusion.

I hope she snd her family stay safe, wishing them all the best.

Couldn’t stop listening.

Truth is stranger than fiction. Nancy’s engaging style of writing and her candid, charming delivery brought home this breathtakingly broad, heavy, yet hilarious American memoir. Highly recommend.
