Publisher's summary

Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence.

Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning. Child after child disappeared, a reign of terror the town desperately wants to forget. Now that terror has returned to seize another girl. And another. And another.

This is the story Laura's been waiting for - her one last chance to get back onto the front page. She dives deeper into a case that runs colder by the second, only to discover the truth may be far closer to home than she could have ever imagined.

Powerful, intricate, and tense, Last Girl Gone will have you looking over your shoulder long after the last page.

Fantastic

I loved this book, it's a jewel amidst the costume jewelry I'm starting to get used to in crime fiction. Don't let any negative reviews sway you, this is worth your time,!

Just couldn't stick it out with the narrator

The story seemed interesting but the narration was too monotonous. I really tried but couldn't stick it out.

LOVED it!!

This was an excellent book! I listened to the whole thing in a day, because I just couldn’t stop! It had me to the very end, and took me by surprise many times. I DEFINITELY recommend it. I also really hope they make it into a movie one day. It would be SO good!

A very good book!

I really enjoyed this book, the mystery and storyline really hooked me. My only complaint is that the narrator's voice was very breathy and almost a loud whisper which was annoying to me. Her voice made it difficult for me to get into the first few chapters.

Hang in there

The story develops a little slowly but hang in there because when you get to Part 2, you'll be hooked. Interesting plot twist.

GREAT LISTEN!!

I don’t write reviews but I had to... This is Not Even my preferred genre (I’m into romance and shifters), so when I say this book was AWESOME SAUCE; easily one of my favorites. Had just enough of EVERYTHING.. no plot holes. No romance (per se). The narrator liked her voice for the book. Was on my toes most of the listen but the last 4 hrs will give you little anxiety fits ... LOVE IT

Decent story, boring SJ tropes, meh action realism

The writing, the descriptions, the prose, not bad at all. The character development (minus the near constant social justice themes) was well done. The action scenes were a bit too unrealistic, with glitches in technical stuff, guns, techniques, etc. The writer might study up on weapons, fighting, etc. Then possibly turn down the volume on the SJ stuff, and I'd read (listen) to more. Seriously, not every male in the south is a fat, handsy, sexist clan member, thanks!

A solid book

I guess I saw the big twist coming from a mile away. The book was silly at times. I also seem to have had some bad luck listening to repeated books that show the male characters as bumbling idiots or just plain awful humans. This is no exception. But, the story was generally ok. It was a solid 3.5 star book. I didn’t care for the narrator. But I did like the main character and that goes a long way towards liking a book.
